The atmospheric [CO2] in which crops grow today is greater than at any point in their domestication history and represents an opportunity for positive effects on seed yield that can counteract the negative effects of greater heat and drought this century. In order to maximize yields under future atmospheric [CO2], we need to identify and study crop cultivars that respond most favorably to elevated [CO2] and understand the mechanisms contributing to their responsiveness. Soybean (Glycine max Merr.) is a widely grown oilseed crop and shows genetic variation in response to elevated [CO2].

ABSTRACT
The crop yield results from processes and complex reactions that occur during the growth and development under external conditions, such as the amount of incident energy intercepted (leaf area), absorbed (electronic excitation), converted (CO2 fixation), redistributed between the vegetal tissues (partition of assimilates) and metabolized in different plant parts (utilization efficiency). So it can be stated that the presence of leaves is a major factor in plant life because, among other functions that it performs there is the capture of light energy that is essential in the photosynthetic process. The methods used to estimate the leaf area can be classified as destructive or nondestructive, direct or indirect. In destructive methods is necessary to remove parts of the plant to perform the measurement. While in the non-destructive methods, the removal of the parts isn’t necessary, in other words, these methods preserve the integrity of the plants, allowing the continuation of the measurements on the same plant. Direct methods are based on measurements taken directly on the leaves, while the indirect ones are based on the known correlation between a biometric variable measured and the real leaf area. The leaf area of a culture has a great importance especially in aspects related to its yield, as well as being closely related to the photosynthetic process of the plants, it can also helps in some cultural techniques such as pruning, fertilization, irrigation, spacing, application of pesticides and quantification of the damage caused by pests and diseases. Among the methods for the determination of the leaf area in coffee, there are the two that are most commonly used: leaf size and use of leaf area integrator.

Sinceramente, eu vi no r-bloggers e não acreditei. É possível calcular área de figuras geométricas no R. Bem isso sempre foi possível, basta ter as coordenadas do polígono. Mas não estou falando de áreas geográficas das quais possuímos os mapas. Estou falando de áreas de figuras digitalizadas, como por exemplo a folha de uma planta, as asas de uma borboleta, um torrão de solo, uma pedra, a seção de de um tronco, uma semente. Enfim, as possibilidades são infinitas.
